Our Dear Friend Uncle George Alasandrie Theseira ( 14th April 1937 -7th August 2015)

9th August 2015

Uncle George, we are all going to miss you.

You came to Cameron Highlands 16 years ago with your lovely family, drawn by the cool climate and beautiful natural surroundings.

You became dismayed by the on-going destruction of Cameron Highlands and our paths crossed. Together we founded REACH and you have been a pillar of strength since then.

We thank you.

For many years you were our treasurer, patiently doing our accounts, recording meticulously all  the ins and outs in the big green ledger of yours, filing all the invoices, vouchers , receipts in this briefcase that grew larger with the passing of time. Never once complaining, bearing with our myriad temperaments , your superb accounting work literally propped our organisation up.

We thank you.

You were a sea of calm in the turbulent work of environmental conservation. At monthly meetings whenever temperatures were rising and nerves were getting frayed, you would remarked in a calm collected voice with a hint of humour and a twinkle in your eye., and suddenly everyone would burst into gales of laughter and all would be peaceful again. You taught us that environmental work is for the long haul and sometimes we have to see the lighter side of things or else we will truly be burnt out before long.

We thank you.

You were a person with multiple talents and you were ever-ready to share them with us. Skill in playing the saxophone, keyboard and guitar you entertained us at social gatherings. Your ability to speak in Latin took us all by surprise, providing us a delightful interpretation of the orchid names. Your skills in carpentry came in handy too during the construction of the biodiversity site in Gunung Brinchang.

We thank you.

You were a master storyteller and would regaled us with stories of your younger days, during the Japanese Occupation, during your time in the seminary, your time in the Ports of Saudi Arabia and your hunting days. We enjoyed that very much. And in your storytelling you taught us that one should live life to the fullest.

Thank you for all that you have shared with us and helping us make Cameron Highlands a better place.

Rest in Peace, Uncle George and do play your saxophone to the Angels…..they would love it, just as we did….
