Special Olympics in Cameron Highlands  on the 18th June 2014 to 20th June 2014

Let Me Win. But If I Cannot Win,

Let Me be Brave in the Attempt

4th June 2014-CHERISH (an NGO training centre for children with intellectual disabilities in Cameron Highlands) will be organizing a Special Olympics tournament for children/persons with special needs on the 18th June 2014 to the 20th June 2014. This would be the 1st time an event of this nature is being held in Cameron Highlands and it would involve participants from 10 homes. A total of 80 special athletes will be participating ranging in age from 12 years to 35 years with over 140 volunteers assisting.

Special Olympics in contrast to Para Olympics is for children/persons with intellectual disabilities. The tournaments played will be Bocce (similar to lawn bowling)rather than track events and will be carried out at the Tanah Rata field over 2 days. Special Olympics aims to bring together children/persons with intellectual disabilities to develop physical fitness and mental strength. It also aims to promote a sense of caring in the community and encourage interaction between the children and society so that these children are better accepted into society and help from the community more forthcoming. Competitions are designed to give opportunities to every special athlete to prove him/herself that winning is possible if there is adequate training.

This event is sanctioned by Special Olympics Council Of Malaysia and organized with the cooperation of Special Olympics Hilir Perak and Bethany Home ,Teluk Intan. It is funded mainly by generous contributions from individuals and companies and would not have been possible without the help of hundreds of volunteers.

In conjunction with this event, a Torch Run will be held on the 14th June 2014 and 15th June 2014 and will begin at Bethany Home,Teluk Intan and end at Tanah Rata Cameron Highlands covering a running distance of 61km  and reaching an elevation of 1400m above sea level. Each special athlete runner will run about 500m except the hill runs and will be accompanied by other runners. We believe this would be the first Torch Run by Special Athletes in Malaysia.

Having this Special Olympics Boccee Tournament event and Torch Run in Cameron Highlands is very meaningful to us as it will not only highlight that Cameron Highlands is a hill resort but that Special Children are given much importance here too. Every effort must be taken to give them the skills to assimilate into society and to lead a normal life.
